Big difference POWER in the USA there is 120 vac 220vac and even 480 vac. 60 hz is a standard for transmission of power and the power is tied as a grid from CANADA TO MEXICO it is easyer to buy power from states that don't use it right now which makes the grid very stable. A a t substation the transformers bring it down from 275 kv to local distribution 16kv or lower. I f you have a heater of a big proportions you would like to have 480 volts ac as opposed to 120 vac for wire efficiency. for 60 hz you don't need much iron core for the transformers as opposed to 50 hz. Power remain the same no matter what but you don't need as much wire mass with higher voltage. some big users like cement co. will have thier own substation to provide the V/I ratio best for them. Actualy because of the heat [ SOME BURNS USED TIRES] turn around and sell a portion of the power back to the source or use it internaly for their own use.
