A long time ago, I wrote a basic PID tuning tutorial intended for

industrial operators, but it give the general idea of what a PID
controller does and what tuning might consist of. You can find this at:
http://www.tcnj.edu/~rgraham/PID/popelish.html

For a historical perspective, the original Ziegler and Nichols paper
on PID control tuning based on a different method (ultimate period) is
available at:
http://www.driedger.ca/Z-N/Z-N.html

Just adding the key word "tutorial" to any PID subject search, on
Google, will greatly increase the percentage of useful hits.

For lots of pointers and good advice on this topic, I suggest you ask
again at sci.engr.control.
