Hi All,

As per a recent enquiry does anyone have any experience of vehicle license
plate capture on cctv systems? I require a camera to be able to view number
plates day or night as vehicle are driven in to a close on an industrial
estate. I do not need recognition software the idea is to have a camera
specifically positioned to view the number plates and another to view the
scene.

Searches on the internet return results mainly about automatic recognition
which is not really required i have found a couple of cameras but they are
ususally used as part of recognition software and hence probably extremely
expensive.

Any thoughts appreciated.

Hi
We have had some success using a small camera with a digital zoom (220)&
Sony ex-view ccd. This camera is supposed to work to 0.09 Lux
This unit costs just over £200.00 with a remote for setting it up, it needs
a housing.
We have used it by zooming in to number plate type size & then using the
negative image setting to make the number plates jump out at you. We have
found the negative image really helps, especially in bright sunlight when UK
plates can dazzle.
If you have some light on the scene this may be an economic way of doing
what you want?
Hope this helps

Effective number plate capture on CCTV (without Automatic Number Plate
Recognition - ANPR) is best achieved using Infra-Red illumination. Have a
look at Derwent / Extreme CCTV website - they specialise in providing
cameras and illuminators with filters chosen to optimise the retroflective
quality of British number plates. Not cheap - but will work.
