Bear with my long description but I must so that you know what I am trying to accomplish. I have a Christmas display which is a three chair ski lift. The chairs are not continuous self illuminated, they have a useless motion sensitive sensor that's supposed to trigger some DC red lights on each chair but even when those do manage to trigger they don't illuminate the chair very well. Because of this I have to put a flood light on them and this diminishes the other Christmas lights in the general area. Since it's a moving chairlift I don't want to rig up and AC line along the cable to provide light to each chair. I would prefer to use a DC powered string of white LEDs strung on each chair. What I've seen uses 3 AA cells or 4.5V to power 20 LEDs. Since all my lights are on a timer it would be nice to at least have these LEDs controlled by a photo switch. The guy at my local electronics store was a jerk and without a part number he would not help me. So I need a switch that operates in the 3-9V DC range and it would be nice if I could have some sort of timer on it so that after the lights turn on at dusk they would switch off after 5 hrs. Any suggestions?
You can click the address link below to see what the ski lift looks like. Whatever apparatus I rig up to it can't be too heavy or it will affect performance of the lift motor. Thanks.

if it is a moving device the best will be a switch along the way that triggers on-off like on assembly lines. I belive that your motion detector works fine now why did I say that becouse most motion detectors are realy detecting disturbance of LIGHT. I suggest you cover the motion detector with a funnel so it sees only the right direct light not ambient light. I think your problems will just go away. try it.
