Can anyone help me please?

I need to build a remote control to switch a 12v 6amp water pump, can you tell me the best sort of spec I would need to go for to give me trouble free operation and a good range.

reliable is wires 100-200 feet you may buy toy transmitters for $40 and try to inplement thembut unless you know what you are doing it could cost you more and time. the wire can be garden varity underground the switch should be a any switch at the pump end needs a contactor cheap and dirty. mind you this is not the only way.

Elpro makes a good unit, we use them in the utilities industry and have several that have range of over a mile, not sure of the price.
