I have a panasonic rear projection tv that stopped working today. It wouldn't turn on. I don't know much about this stuff at all, but I pulled the back off and looked to see if anything happened while I tried to turn it on and one of the resistors kept over heating. It was glowing red. I could see the lamps starting to light up, but once the resistor got hot it shut down. Can I just cut that resistor off and solder on a new one?

Resistors they don't go bad but they do burn out like the way you describe. The problem is not the resistor replacing it would make no difference i believe one of your capacitor in the power supply is taking a mexican vacation. It is a big tubular form look for it to be bulgy and from cold does it get hot fast when power is applied if so replace it. you may change the resistor too while you are at to be on the safe side goog luck.

I changed out the resistor was checking out the capictors, but there a lot of them. None of them seemed to get hot when I tried to turn on the tv. Any suggestions for knowing which one to look at. I look at the couple of bigger ones first and they did nothing. The resistor that burned out was on the deflector plate and not the power suppy one if that helps.

In that case i assume that your trouble is still there. Let me say this. a resistor is a passive component and usualy very stable to have burn out means that a surge of current of significant time has passed through it to have caused a burn out . Why without a road map i cannot help out. see if you can find a schematic of the thing then we can help further.
