I am new to rechargeable electronics so I'm don't really know what I'm doing yet.

I have a little rechargeable can opener (the B&D Gizmo) that uses two NiCd size D-AA600 batteries that have gone to battery heaven. The two batteries are are connected + to - with a flat cable and there are blades on the open + and - battery ends that connect to the wires in the opener.

Since Ni-Cd batteries seem to die relatively quickly, I would like to get two Ni-MH to fix the problem. I was thinking about getting this battery holder http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2062252 with the two Ni-MH batteries and soldering blades onto the wires that come out of the battery holder to connect them to the opener's wires. Since the charger is built into the opener and the wires were connected directly to the batteries I think this is ok but I have two questions:

First, I need to know if it is ok to use a battery case like this for rechargeable batteries?

Second, is it ok to replace the Ni-Cd with Ni-MH or do I have to use a different kind of charger?

TIA! Very Happy
