A 7401 will drive a cmos. however I would choose a VMOS as opposed to a CMOS the output charateristics is more LIKE in amps as opposed to ma. I would use A 10K pull up at the gate to enhance the full drive input chrateristics of the device. Totem pole driver will increase speed and reduce dissipation. Whatever you make sure that you are grounded otherwise eventualy the device will fail because of stress caused by EDS. An open collector driver with a pull up of 10k will also inprove but not as much as a totem pole driver. What you must consider that with a 5v drive there will be a maximun drain current regardless of drain to source voltage. If you need more current then consider a higher voltage drive.take care.
