i burned up the motor in my wood working saw because it was not getting enough power at the end of the extension cord with alot of stuff on, etc. i don't know if it wasn't getting enough volts or amps? i am an electronics idiot. do i need a multimeter to measure the amps or volts at that outlet?
please help.

Well yes and no. Yes you need a multimeter to check the voltage if it gets there. As soon as you apply the load motors or whatever there things changes because of loading. The whole thing is this you have burn out a motor on an overload if you do the same thing again buy the time you put your meter to it to find the voltage under load it maybe too late. What i suggest is look at your motor AMPERAGE rating and that will tell you how long you may put an extention line to it. Now the extention line must be able to carry the load without much loss . Here are your rules to follow the bigger the wire gauge the less voltage loss. the shorter the lenght of the line the less loss. Since you did not porvide us with actual loading info i cannot realy suggest much more. Take care
