Hello Spehro,
| Quote: | Okay, thanks, I understand. I have a small version of that, but due
partly to the fact I don't have a web server running on my PC I've not
really expanded it.

You don't need to run a server for a Wiki that is local. All you need is
read/write access to that drive from your other PCs.

No, I used to do that when I had a floortop PC.
Now I just take my laptop on vacation with me.
|
You're not afraid of losing it (and data) while on vacation? You don't
leave a backup at home?
| Quote: | However I had considered embedding my PC under the floorboards or in the
loft, partly for security and partly to make a silent working environment.
The only problems were the removable media (FD and CD) though perhaps these
could be done with USB.

Why not a local system with perhaps a Via processor as the media
server? Have the CPU cycles in the basement with 100BaseT or GigE to
hook 'em together. I know someone who put the cycle server in the
garage, though temperature regulation would be something I wouldn't
want to bother with. My basement would be perfect though.

The bad news is that everything is prohibited.

Bet it doesn't meet the EMC emission limits! (;-)
It may. The FCC requires components to pass an "open box test" that
only allows a few dB for the enclosure.
|
Good idea. What with all the custom enclosures with big windows (or some
that are completely transparent), one can't count on any enclosure for
emissions control.

For a moment I thought it might be a serious post, and I was about to

Wall-mounted PCs look easy targets for burglars, so perhaps it might be
better to have home PCs 'wired in' to the house, so that the PC is actually
under the floorboards away from thieving hands while only the keyboard and
monitor are accessible in rooms.
Hardware is easily replaced but the personal data on the hard drives is not.
Am I the only one that removes one or more hard drive and stores them

Sounds what you'd like is a fileserver. Use your laptop for work but
keep the files on the server. Since it won't be heavily loaded just
about any old crappy box should suit. If you use Samba on FreeBSD, to
the laptop it'll look like a Microflaccid Network server but needing
about a tenth of the resources. Steep learning curve, lots of fun
setting it up and trying to get it to work. Give it two huge HDs and a
cron job to keep them in sync, if one conks out your data will be safe
on the other. Once it's up and running unplug the monitor and
keyboard, do the maintenance over telnet or ssh. Unlike Windows
FreeBSD will ignore any BIOS limitations and recognize the full HD
capacity even if the BIOS says otherwise.
