Yes. Either a old-fashioned rheostat or a Variac are pretty well noiseless
in operation. Does take a lot of wall space, though.

You're right. I never thought about it before so I looked it up

Its one of those really good names. Kleenex, Jell-o, Q-tips, Scotch
tape. Have you EVER heard ANYBODY ask for the Tuck tape? Useless
tidbit. Videotape was a registered trademark of Ampex corp.

Theatrical or architectural dimmers will do the tirck. We sell and install
them. A little pricey for a home though. They are SCR controlled with a lot
of control electronics including a digital control circuit. There are DJ
versions that are not as expensive but you will have to make a heck of a
hole in your wall if you want to install it in the Dining Room. We have a
customer who has a whole farm of rheostats on the wall near the sound
console. Talk about sizzle. We're pricing digital for them. Jim

A rectifier diode is reasonably quiet, but you |
get only one dim setting. You would have 3 choices:
full on, half brightness, and off. If you have
a pair of light bulbs both independently dimmed
by diodes, and if one is 40W and the other 100W
you could get 9 different brightness levels with
the pair. Each bulb gets its own "off-half-full"
switch, and with the pair that gives 9 possible
light levels. |

I'm using Leviton and have no noise whatsoever and I'm a ham so am very
conscious of the noisy devices sold today including the switch mode
converters for low voltage halogen lamps.

For most apps the best dimmer is a switchbank, one switch per light
fitting, or with larger venues several per switch. Wont replace all
dimmer apps but has considerable advantages where it is appropriate.

Stage dimmers use motorized big-ass inductors with a removable core...
core all the way in, much inductance, much dimming; core out, no
dimming.

Very low noise dimmers are made for theatres (the ones with live actors).
Dimmer noise otherwise gets into the sound reinforcement system.
Expensive - not like the $3.98 at Walmart kind:
http://www.etdimming.com/
A variac works very well in this application, and is the standard
in small installations.

Ditto here. The "quieter" brand name dimmers are marketed
as such, look for something on the packaging to that effect.
