I have an alarm system installed by ADT for the previous owners. We
did not want to continue with the contract when we purchased the house
as we have a fairly good deterrent (a large dog who barks loudly at
those who come to the house). My question is this. Since ADT only
disconnected us from their service and after several letters do not
want to come and dismantle the sercurity system, can I use it? How
easy would it be to re-set the system to our own pass codes etc? ADT
did take the manuals but our neighbour who receives the ADT service
and has the same system will provide us with the manuals on request.

Regards,
Kevin.

Most alarm companies use the same equipment
these days - what is the name of the panel -
can you describe it?

As i mentioned in several posts before...

Just keep in mind that when you (or the previous owner) take a
professional to install your system...
It will never be yours any more, they don't provide you with ALL the
secret codes, the installer code they keep forcing you to stay whit
them.

You are a dumb fucking shit.

Most every panel on the market *can* be defaulted to factory standard
codes easily - just prove you own it.

Dumb fuck.

Has already been answered and mentioned too, setting back (eventually)
a system to factory standard REMOVE ALL SETUP DATA, setup data
(programming?) where the owner has payd for!
Thanks for that good example you give there of a negative drawback
when the installation is done by "so called" pro's who attempt to let
you pay twice for the setup and don't allow you to upgrade or alter
the system...

Surely it depends on the "terms of the contract" you negotiate. In my case I
originally installed a DIY system. Then, when the panel (Wickes) proved
unreliable, I had a panel changed by a professional installer to Scantronics
9488+ but I insisted on having a full installation manual and an engineering
access code. In that way I could but did not have to use his services
again. I did not sign any maintenance contract but if I did I would ensure
it is only for a year and does not give the installer any rights to the
system.

That's a clever approach...
