I would like to add that there is one disadvantage to this approach and that
is that the garage zone must be also an entry/exit zone and thus giving a
burglar vital extra seconds before the siren will sound. The only way round
this I could see would be a remote keypad fixed to the outside on the garage
wall between the doors. However that would require a weather proofed keypad
which is not a standard accessory.

On balance I think a remote keypad and one or two Dual tecs will be more
flexible even though I will have to dig out turf for the cable. As I
mused
in an earlier posting , in such configuration I can fully control either
house or garage or both from either the main panel or the remote keypad
using part and full set facilities of the new panel. This is important
because I can enter either garage first and then house or vice versa and
similarly on the way out. If I used contacts I would have to have one on
each front garage door, one on a side door and one on each window and I
could not leave a (small) window open.

There seems to be an opportunity for security equipment manufacturers to
come up with a simple hybrid solution to allow just such a basic system
extension. All it requires is a control panel where just one zone and a
single keypad can be connected wirelessly. I am sure that at a right
price
there would be a demand for this, there must be quite a few people with
unprotected detached garages or sheds even if they have an alarm system in
the main house

This is true, Just thought a Hybrid Scantronic was what he wanted.
Unfortunately the hybrid panels don't support keypads so suggested a fob
instead. We will see!!!

Why don't you get a Scantronic 9751 and 9930 keypad with 9955 radio
expander.
Then add a 715r (if it is a sealed environment) or 735r's on the
doors.
You
could then use a 725r to set/unset the system instead of a keypad
and
job
done.

If you use a 725r to set/unset the system you can make the garage an instant
zone and disarm the system from outside. This transmitter will also do a
full and part set.
One note regarding the (small) window, It is not advisable to leave a window
open when the alarm is set as it will probably cause false alarms. The safer
way if this is what you want to do is a contact on the window with a second
magnet in the open position.
If you want to use Dual tec's hook them up to a 12v power supply and trigger
them through a 735r.
Good luck
