Ventcoft Compact Classic external sounder |
|
|
I just fitted a Ventcoft Compact Classic external sounder.
Not overly impressed with some aspects of it, I must say.
I first connected it up to the alarm system indoors so I
could see how it worked, rather than having to play around
with it at the top of a ladder and repeatedly disturb all
the neighbours. The sounder itself seems fine -- had to
sandwich it between two cushions off the sofa to avoid
deafening myself.
The strobe tube was fitted too close to the PCB and didn't
come through the case opening into the translucent case area,
so it wasn't very visible. The transparent PCB cover has a
special high area over that part of the PCB to take the strobe
tube into the translucent area, but the tube didn't have long
enough mounting leads to reach it. I removed it from the PCB
and remounted it on longer leads. This brings it through the
case opening into the translucent area, and it's now more
visible.
Having checked out all the features indoors, I then mounted
it properly outside and reconnected it to the alarm. First
problem, why aren't the alternately flashing LEDs on?
Stangely, the strobe and sounder worked OK. Checked out
supply at panel OK. Back up the ladder to take the cover off.
Just before I do so, I realise the LEDs are flashing, but
are drowned out by daylight, and also, like the strobe tube,
they don't protrude far enough to come through the case
opening into the translucent area. Now, later in the evening,
I can see them, just. I guess sometime when I'm bored, I'll
take the unit down and extend the LEDs like I did the strobe
tube, or maybe swap it for a different make/model.

A bit like that with mine. I installed the alarm some 5 years
ago, but deliberately didn't install the external sounder at
the time as I wanted to make sure there were not going to be
lots of false alarms. There were a couple of initial causes
of them which I fixed, but then I never got round to fitting
the external sounder, until yesterday.

One thing I had to do was to dive into the panel programing
to work out how to disable the armed confirmation squawk,
which was far too loud/disruptive from the siren in a
residential area.

The strobe works fine and during the day/night I can see a flashing
led. Is there two? Can't say I noticed.
|
Yes. The absence of one indicates a fault.
No red means the tamper circuit is not correctly closed.
No green means the hold-off voltage is missing (I think
you get no red either in this case, as the hold-off
voltage supplies them both). It maybe just that you
can't actually see them both, even if they are working.

when I trigger it without modification.
The model on the leaflet was Compact Classic Spirit.
|
Same here. It was difficult to work out exactly which mine was.
The leaflet describes several models with different sets of jumpers,
and I don't think mine was a perfect match for any of the listed
combinations.
