Anyone use IP intruder alarm signalling yet?

If people show enough interest I may delve deeper into this new signalling
system and share the goods and bads with you.

Yes. The company I work for (Geoquip) produces a range of
perimeter detection systems. We're in the process of making
at least one verion of every product IP-capable.

I would be interested in what would be found with these kind of systems
from a vulnerability analysis point of view. (just out of a geeky interest)

Cameras may be exploited causing a picture lockup so that you could
drive a bus load of naked nuns past without seeing them, there are also
lots and lots of live insecure cameras available through Google
searches, I understand VOIP can be captured and played back as an MP3 or
similar. If a company has an internet connection then they are
potentially vulnerable from all sorts of malware & practice.

I wonder how secure alarms are - can they be disabled or denied their
service via the internet or by plugging nto the local network?

It depends a lot on the specific systems used and on the configuration.

In general you should separate the security lan from the
business/general purpose lan. If you're running a single site
then there is no need for external internet access at all. If
you're running a multi-site setup, then you should be on a vpn.

Our fence alarms have the option to transmit all traffic over
ssl - if you pick the right modules when developing you get
this essentially for zero effort. This does have a slight
performance cost though. Most cameras don't have this option
unfortunately.

Not if it's set up right - see above.

or by plugging into the local network?

Any attempt at plugging a cable in to a secure switch would
involve triggering a box tamper alarm. If you did manage to
connect you'd then need to either guess the passwords for
the cameras or fake the traffic. Brain dead dos attacks would
achieve the same affect as cutting the cable - blocking the
traffic but triggering a video loss alarm.
