Intermittent capacitor ESR ? |

Is this phenoma, imtemittent capacitor high ESR possible? If so can someone
please explain the physics? I've got a Kenwood PS-40 20 amp switching power
supply that shuts down at random times, sometime after a few minutes and
today it has run continuously for over 26 hours. If it shuts down it has to
be turned off for about 15 minutes before you can turn it on. It uses a
TL494CN chip. PCB board flexing or component tapping have no effect.

Caps go open. High ESR is just a degree of going open.
physics not required to explain a broken wire (inside the cap).

Many times with age, the caps start to become in ESR and in their microfarad
rating with temperature shift, and with the variation of the voltage applied
to it. Sometimes the wire contacts internally in a component can also go
intermittent. There is no great physics to understand this.
