I did a Google search for SMD soldering/desoldering tools and found a web
page from howardelectronics.com.

They advertise a Xytronic Auto-Temp 137ESD, new, for a sale price of $99.95.
This is a temperature controlled, digital display, tip cleaner, etc.

Has anyone had any experience with this tool? Would it be a good unit for
light to medium use for SMD parts?

I using 137ESD for about 4 years - model without digital temperature indicator and an other 137ESD with indicator for 1 year. Very good tool, I think that some additional soldering tips should be bought with it. Tip with 0.8 mm end diameter is good for all SMDs sizes from 0603. For smaller sizes you can buy a tip 0/4 mm in diameter.
137ESD is powerfull enough to reach working temperature (I using 290-300 celsius degrees) in about 30 sec. and to solder massive things such as copper screens and big high frequency coaxial connectors. I satisfied with my 137s^)
