hii...
i am working on a project where i need to transmit serial data over a long distance approx 2 miles...on twisted copper lines
can you offer suggestions on how it is possible...
i googled it and found out that there are many drivers and modems for this but with insanely high prices like a 1000$

please help me out i am really stuck against a wall here....

Its a Data acquisition system
i am using avr to measure temp humidity and power and tx it via uart to a PC
there will be many avrs joining 2 the pc... i am using only 2 wires tx and gnd
no feedback needed, the problem is...
the distance between avr and pc is approx 2 km

how do i cover that distance ...
may be i have 2 use modems ics but i dont no which ....
please guide me a little...

I will try to cover two miles by using phone lines if that is possible. then using two PC WITH a USB PORT STICK A MAGICJACK.COM at each end. THE COST $10/YEAR 24/7/360. NOW THAT IS NOT THE SPEED OF LIGHT but certainly cheaper. I use it myself 24/7/360 to asia. for data you must add an A/D and D/A AT BOTHH END. SINCE BOTH HAVE SEPARATE PHONE # IT WILL BE 24/7/360 If you want to stick a lazer and modulate it for two miles it might work if it is in direct line of sight. go to sparkfun.com they have some RF tranx rec. real cheap buut not for 2 miles but it can be used as repeaters to get there.just some ideas to start or gets thinking.
