I guess the degaussing circuit in the used 27" TV I bought does not work. I magnetized it and discoloration won't go away. I have my eye on some degaussing coils and tried to make one myself (from an old 15" monitor) without any success.

If I hold my 21" PC monitor in front of the TV and turn the monitor on will it degauss my TV screen?

You need a TV repair degaussing coil. It will fix the problem but if your degauss coil is not working the problem may come back.

Turn on the coil. Hold it up to the effected part of the CRT and then slowly remove the coil. Then turn off the coil!

A bulk tape eraser might work.
