I saw someone do this on the net. Take a coil from an old PC monitor and twist it then fold it in two (with a dia. ~ 6"-9"). He attached a light bulb to the circuit to limit the current. Attach all of that to an extension cord. I tried all of that and couldn't get the light bulb to light (I tried three bulbs). I removed light bulb housing and waved the coil in front of the TV and I didn't see anything happen on the screen. I don't think any current is going thru the coil. What did I do wrong? (I have discoloration in two corners of the screen - somehow I managed to magnetize the TV when I transported it in my car yesterday.)

If the bulb does not light then there is an open in the coils somewhere . when you turn on the TV there is a de-magnetizing coil around the tube WHICH DOES EXACTLY THAT. If it does not it could be an open in the coil and/or your current limiter has failed.
