I am looking at buying power supplies for some testing but am unsure on the requirements of the supply that I need. I have to supply a max of 16V and 45A so drive some external loads. However, some of those loads could have up to 100A in-rush current. The question I have is do I need a supply that is rated for say 20V, 50A to cover the DC operation or do I need a supply with at least 145A capability (45A DC + 100A in-rush)?

i believe you under estimate the in rush current by quite a bit twice the output current is never real. my 350 watts PC has more then that rush in current. when you buy your PS make sure that you read about their in-rush specs. your output is 720 watts asuning a ~90% efficiency it will be 800 watts requited from the line. i think you might blow circuit breakers every time it all depends on timing how long the rush-in and how fast the circuit breaker reacts. that is for a house wiring that is. good luck
