Nope. I was drunk. ;-)
But though I'm 75 miles away I can still see the fallout cloud. It's
*huge* and really ain't doin' any favours for London's air quality.

I lived in Luton when I was working for Kent Instruments - 1973-6. It's
no worse than Slough.

I wonder how they managed to set up a fuel-air bomb - at Flixborough
they managed to rupture a 20" (50cm) pipe and vent a great deal of
cyclohexane to atmosphere

http://www.hse.gov.uk/comah/sragtech/caseflixboroug74.htm

This one doesn't seem to have been as bad. Cyclohexane is more volatile
than petrol/gasoline and - IIRR - forms explosive mixutres with air
over a wider range of concentrations.

Reminds me of this one:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oakland_Hills_firestorm

The first we heard of this was when we were in our backyard in San
Francisco, and smelled smoke and saw black cinders falling out of the
sky on us.

Did it wake you up?

Here in Welwyn Garden City - it awoke me.
The windows shook as if there was someone very annoyed indeed on the parapet outside.
Minutes later a succession of flashing lights as police (?) vehicles made their way out of town.
Something in me said go follow them with your camera - but I'd only been in bed for an hour.
No bang. No high frequencies, just a rumble.
I'm about 15 miles away.

Looks like a change to my route into work is called for.

The B487 in yellow is the road I normally use to drive through Hemel.
The Buncefield depot is in the bottom right hand of the map ( about 1/2
mi away ) and it was the nearer northern part apparently that 'went
off'.

St Albans has been clear of the cloud since the prevailing winds are
northerlies currently.

The depot apparently stored and distributed mainly
aviation fuel, underground pipes for the inputs and
feeds to several major airports. The US market will
probably still shiver though, and that will filter
out to the rest of us.

I have friends who live about 1/2 a mile from there.
They've had damage to a couple of windows and the
garage door.

Quite impressive pictures on the TV. A seriously bad situation.
