Hi everyone,
I have a job lot of these components....they are the shape and size of
1/4W resistors but are sky blue in color and have the following
markings:
BEI
RN55C
3401
FJ
My multimeter reads 3.39Kohms in either direction, the diode test range
reads 0.58V in either direction and I can't seem to get consistant
readings on my capacitance range.
What are they please?

RN55C is a range of resistors made by Vishay (Dale). The part you have
is a 3.4k ohm (3401, 3 significant digits, 1 multipler digit) Mil Spec
1% device.

I think the RN55C series is 0.1% ?

There was another related family that is 0.1%, but the F suffix
specifies a 1% part here.

Thermistor ? Easy to check. See if the resistance changes with temp.

Seems like I've seen inductors on PCB's that looked like resistors, but
were a blue-green color.

Sounds like a 3400-ohm resistor. 3401 probably means 340 * 10^1.

I use them in my designs regularly, where I work.

They are definitely resistors, metal film, 3400 Ohms, 50 ppm tempco
(the 'C' after 55), 1% (the 'F' suffix), rated for 1/4 W in commercial
applications or 1/8 W in military applications. BEI is the
manufacturer, and the 'J' is a suffix put on by BEI probably to
designate a lead finish.

Go to vishay.com to get the data sheet.

Precision MIL-spec resistors:
http://www.newark.com/product-details/text/catalog/9608.html for
examples, but the 3401 is 3400 ohms, which you seem to have verified.
The FJ is probably temperature coefficient and some kind of flameproof
spec, and BEI is a manufacturer's logo.

Cheers!
