I have an old car which small Jap hatchback from 1988.

Do I need to disconnect the car's battery leads when I attach a
battery charger?

If it's a Micra with points ignition, probably not. The only electronic
bit in the entire car is the box of tricks under the seat which
increases the idle speed if you switch on the HRW.
