Repair of a portable computer battery pack |

Hi,
I'm writing from a Gericom Webshox portable computer of 2001,
now the battery pack ( UN241S1 Rechargeable Li-Ion Battery Ratings:
14,4Vdc 3600mAh )
is broken son I decide to change the accumulators,
I choose 8 NiMH 3,6Ah 1,2V Accumulator.
After the substitution it still doesn't work, the charge seems to be
ok,
also is I do not understand why is used a 14 Volt supply to charge
battery pack to about 5,8V

+ +
- -
------------------white
+ +
- -
------------------yellow
+ +
- -
------------------green
+ +
- -
------------------black
The discharge phase is not ok, the 5,8v coming from the accumulators
seems to be blocked
in one of the two printed circuits comprised in the battery pack, so
my questions:
1) What is the job of these two circuits?
2) It is possible to connect directly the accumulators to the output
bypassing these circuits?
3) What the white, yellow and green wires are used for??
4) where I can found a scheme of a typical battery pack ??
5) why the supply is 14v to charge a 5,8v battery pack ??

Can't tell exactly what you're trying to do.
I can say that you cannot replace lithium batteries with NiCd and
expect the charger to work. If there's a protection chip, you can't
expect the discharge to work either.

you cannot charge a NiMh pack from a Li-ion charger two totally different |
things a Li-ion cell is either 3.6 or 3.7 volts a cell a NiMh is 1.2 volts a
cell so for the same number of cells you only have 1/3 of the voltage and a
NiMh charger is a current based device and a Li-Ion is a voltage charger
just lucky you tried it this way as charging a li-Ion pack from a NiMh
charger and your laptop would be toast?? have a look here and try again

To be short in an explanation, you need a new proper battery for your
computer. You cannot mix the battery types with the wrong charger unit. You
can not mix old battery cells with new ones.
The circuit boards have circuits in them for sensing the voltages, and
charge rates. If not working properly, the battery will not function with
the charger and computer.
You NEED a new original battery, if you want things to work right.

"Original" is not always "new". You may buy a "new" original battery |
but it came with the same ship the laptop came with. It was just
sitting on the shelf until you bought it. Your best bet would be to
send the battery pack to one of those companies who professionally
rebuild Li-Ion packs with fresh Li-Ion cells. I know there are several
in Europe just don't have the name ready. Maybe they still accept
your now mutilated battery pack or they offer you a rebuilt one.
Li-Ion battery packs are very dangerous when not charged correctly.
They may set your house on fire or disfigure your face permanently.
NiMH cells are not *that* dangerous but may explode as well^Wbadly.
Don't try to be cheap when your health is at risk -
go to a professional!
